Help for the self-promotionally challenged

As if writing isn't hard enough. I used to think that once I sold my book I could just move on to writing the next one. I write; someone else prints and promotes. Publishers have people who do that. Right?

Nuh-uh. Maybe in some bygone golden literary era, but now the job of selling and promotion falls largely to the author. Which makes me wonder why I keep writing because I find self-promotion about as much fun as squeezing lemon juice in a paper cut.

The folks over at Writer Unboxed know there's more than one promotion-phobe out there; they brought in guest blogger JA Konrath who offers eight straightforward tips in his post How Do I Self-Promote?

Your words ring true. I am in the same boat. Self promoting is sooo not up my alley. But eventually we will love our "product" enough to promote it. It's a hard road... but we must walk it! (BTW- Reading your chapters now on Authonomy...)

I'm learning this promotion thing as well. This morning I gave five speeches. My new novel, Highland Blessings, will be releasing May 2010. I'm working on a video book trailer. I hope I can do this.

Julia,
I have had the same awakening about self-promoting. My problem is time. Being in retail management, my free time for promoting is getting smaller. I have found that book signings are my niche.
BTW, I found you while perusing NB blog.
